Weekly update – 3 March 2023

Exhibition excitement
We were absolutely delighted to welcome a grand total of 775 visitors to our exhibition last week. And that's not including the dogs and small children. Thank you to all who took the time to visit us. We hope you had a chance to chat to the team and left informed about what is coming up in the future. And if you popped in on Saturday, we hope you got to say hello to our Lord Mayor, Cllr Hugh Mason, and Project Director Guy Mason (both pictured - and not related, despite the surname!) who took the time to attend and chat to our visitors.
Marine machines
The next phase of marine work around Southsea Castle involves construction of an armour rock wall (known as a groyne) built out into the sea from the beach to limit erosion of the beach near The Pyramids. Three extra-large long reach excavators will be used for these works, which are due to start late March - stay tuned for details. We get a few comments about our fun headlines. So if anyone can come up with a good (clean) groyne pun while this work is underway, please get in touch and we'll use what we're allowed! Drop us an email: southseacoastalscheme@portsmouthcc.gov.uk
Merle swirls in
Our communications team welcomed Merle from Herford in Germany for an eventful work experience, just in time to experience the week running up to our big coastal defence schemes' exhibition. She greeted and counted the 775 visitors over two days and even got a chance to meet the Lord Mayor. Merle is studying to be a geography and English teacher at the University of Osnabrück and we wish her the very best in her future career. But feel free to stay with us, Merle, if you change your mind! We will miss you.
Prove it!
A new national law has been introduced that means voters must show photo ID when voting at a polling station. The new rule will be in place for the council elections on 4 May. Only certain types of photo ID can be accepted. If you don’t have one of these, you’ll need to apply for a free voter authority certificate. To vote in May, the deadline for applying for a certificate is 25 April. You don’t need photo ID to vote by post.
