Weekly update – 21 July 2023

And we’re off!

Our summer roadshow kicks off on Wednesday 26 July from 11am-2pm and you’ll find us in our gazebo on the common next to our Pier Road offices, near the information centre gate. It’s the first of six Wednesdays that we’ll be on the road.

Also, this week we have two drop-in sessions where you can come and talk to us about our future plans for the area between Hovertravel and Blue Reef Aquarium. We’ll be opening up our information centre on Pier Road on Wednesday 26 July 4pm-7pm and Thursday 27 July 2pm-6pm to show you the design plans for this area.

Superior exterior

Progress continues on the pouring of the promenade slabs along the top and bottom of the ‘Theatre of The Sea’. We’ve completed 41 of the 86 slabs. Once the concrete is poured, a white retarder is sprayed onto the top of each slab. This is then power-washed off which takes off the top layer of concrete, allowing the aggregate (stones in the concrete) to be visible and giving a nice textured surface finish.

We ‘fill’ good… we knew that we would now..

Or that’s how James Brown would put it! We have started ‘backfilling’ the t-wall units making up the curved wall in front of the bandstand field. Backfilling is undertaken once the t-wall units are in place, covering them in two types of fill material which lock-in the walls. Once both fill materials are in place, compacted, and levelled, then the concrete promenade is poured on top.

Dive-in to Portsmouth Museum’s new exhibition

The Southsea Coastal Scheme is featured in the new, free ‘Ocean at the End of the Lane: Discovering Portsmouth’s coastline’ exhibition at Portsmouth Museum and Art Gallery. The exhibition explores how we have used and changed our coastline over the years so make sure to check it out! Read news article.
