In crane sight!

We’ve been busy preparing for the installation of the pre-cast concrete units down at South Parade Pier to Speakers’ Corner (Frontage 5 East). This week we received a rather large delivery of a 100-tonne crane, we have constructed a temporary platform for the crane to run along. We will soon be placing the ready made concrete units next to the pier, and then starting on the wall next to the road, which will provide the secondary sea defence.
These will be placed from the eastern end near South Parade Pier towards the western end at Speakers’ Corner. In this area there are 199 tiered wall units, several bench and seating units, plus 97 stepped revetment units (which lead down from the new prom height onto the beach) to install. Let the countdown commence!
Greening the grey…

Meanwhile at Frontage 3 on Southsea Common we have been busy taking down hoarding bit by bit as we remove the temporary footpath and reinstate the grass here in sections.
We are currently working on the section in front of the Naval war memorial (pictured in red), this may appear blocked off but please be assured we will make sure that there is always a passage for you to get through here.
They’ve flown the enclosure!

Our Brent Geese refuge has now been removed from Southsea Common. This enclosure was a vital part of our work, providing a safe space for these important over-wintering birds, which is a condition set out by Natural England as part of our planning permission.
We surveyed the enclosure three times a week over this winter period, and the geese remembered where to land and returned in their numbers! We recorded the first arrivals in November 2025 and last recorded them in the refuge on 20 March 2026 before they headed off. Across the winter we recorded frequently high numbers, with the highest being 258 geese!
On the road again…

We will shortly be hitting the road again in time for spring/summer with our gazebo along the seafront. This will be a chance for us to speak to you and answer any questions you may have about the scheme.
Our next upcoming date for the diary is Thursday 4 June 2026 and we can’t wait to see you then. We will give more details nearer the time, but let’s all pray for sunshine and low winds!
Don’t forget to have your say!
The Southsea Common (Frontage 3) survey closes at 6pm on Thursday 30 April 2026.
We want to hear from you – use the link below to have your say.
