Weekly update – 15 December 2023
Reach up for the rocks…
Our long reach excavators are here and ready to start work on 3 January 2024. From this date until mid to late February we’ll start moving some of the rocks from the rock stockpile into place next to Blue Reef Aquarium. As previously mentioned, this small section of frontage three (Southsea Common) is being built now so that we will be able to open frontage four at Southsea Castle next year so it will be fully accessible. Rock works will happen tidally, and these times will be tide dependent within the hours of 05:00 and 23:00 daily.
On the second week of December, our true love sent to us…
…two Victorian bottles! We had a double surprise on frontage five at Speakers’ Corner – well done to Tom and David who uncovered some Victorian bottles while digging up the old promenade. Our archaeologist Neil thinks the larger of the two could have possibly been an ink dispenser. Both exciting finds are in near perfect condition! They’ll be on display in our project information centre from mid-January.
Plenty of room at the inn!
This week we had our winter roadshow in Southsea Library and 70 of you came to see us with your questions and to talk about the scheme, including what we have coming up next.
Our roadshows have been a great success this year and we’ve had some lovely feedback from you all so we’ll be planning more to keep you informed. Keep your eyes peeled for future events in 2024!
This week’s spotlight is on our crane operator George. George has been with us for over two years and also worked on frontage one at Long Curtain Moat. Nearly all of the pre-cast concrete units you can see on site were lifted in by George. He’s originally from Notting Hill and has lived on the south coast for a long time. His favourite meal is definitely a curry.
See you next year
Our project information centre is now closed for Christmas and will be re-opening on 15 January 2024. We’ve loved meeting you all this year and we look forward to seeing more of you in 2024.
