Completing the cycle
At Frontage 3 (Southsea Common) the two-way cycle lane is complete, having had its anti-skid buff surface laid and white lines painted. This will be a big change for cyclists as there was no dedicated road space for them previously along Clarence Esplanade. Also in this area we are continuing to add line markings to the highway and parking areas.
Let’s clear things up
We’re a week into closing off the promenade between South Parade Pier and Speakers’ Corner and site clearance is progressing well in advance of construction. We need to remove memorial benches, lighting columns, bins and other furniture before work starts. Plaques from the removed memorial benches will be temporarily homed on a new bench while work is underway and this can be found just east of South Parade Pier. While the promenade is closed, there is a diversion route in place, and this can be viewed on the hoardings enclosing the area with yellow and blue wave symbols along the route to guide you.
Park & Plant
At Frontage 3 (Southsea Common) we’ve made good progress on the handrails alongside the pedestrian ramp and steps leading to the Esplanade carpark, making it easily accessible. The left side of the car park ramp handrails will be constructed next. Plants have been installed here to further enhance the area.
Excavate, excavate!
Over by South Parade Pier we’re excavating the beach adjacent to the promenade to enable installation of sheet piles and placement of stepped access to the beach. The installation work itself is due to start in the week commencing 23 March. We’re also forming a piling platform with the excavated beach material. The machine that installs the piles will then sit on this platform to install them. This platform will be in place for around one month and will then be redistributed to form part of the beach again.
