Help us plan the future of Southsea’s seafront
Starting this week, public events are being held for two new public consultations where you can help to shape the future of one of the city’s most cherished assets.
This Thursday, the Southsea Coastal Scheme team will hold a three-day exhibition at the Coastguard Studio in Clarendon Road, where residents can find out how the designs for new sea defences along 4.5km of seafront have been changed in response to their feedback that they gave last summer. This will be followed by a series of drop-in events at three of the city’s libraries.
Next week, staff from the council’s planning team will on hand at another series of consultation events which will kick-off the review of the council’s existing seafront masterplan in earnest. This strategy is intended to guide improvements to this entire area of the city, so by updating it now it ensures that all the opportunities that are created by the construction of the new sea defences can be realised in the future.
Cllr Dave Ashmore, cabinet member for environment and community safety said: “There have been some big changes made to the Southsea Coastal Scheme in response to the feedback we got in the summer, so I’m excited to show the public what the team have come up with. This includes a much improved flood defence solution at South Parade Pier, and the retention of vehicle access on both frontages. The project has come a long way over the past 18 months and we really feel we now have a solution that not only takes account of all that we love about Southsea, but also one that everyone can get behind and help make a reality.”
Cllr Ben Dowling, cabinet member for planning, regeneration and economic development added: “Many of the things that people were concerned about or were suggesting to us at some of our previous consultation events sit outside the remit of Southsea Coastal Scheme, so we decided to review the seafront masterplan now so we could capture all the great ideas that residents have. We want this city to have a world-class seafront that fully realises Southsea’s unique position and heritage, and this masterplan will provide us with the blueprint to achieve this”.
