Flood update – 9 April 2024

broad streetIn the early hours of this morning (Tuesday 9 April) a combined spring tide and surge of approximately 5.74m caused flooding to a small number of homes and businesses in the city. Four homes are reported to have flooded in Hamilton Road. This is believed to have occurred as a result of the exceptional tide heights within the harbour. The flood gates at Old Portsmouth prevented major flooding. However, water from underground rose up behind the defences in a limited manner and spilled mainly into the road. The extremely high tide overnight gave rise to more water accumulating in and around Broad Street than usually experienced, and other locations were affected. Council flood duty officers and Colas operatives worked overnight with emergency services and other agencies in various locations and continue to support people affected. They will remain on duty until flood warnings are no longer in force.
